Yale University President Peter Salovey Sends Congratulations Message to the Chien-Shiung Wu Event

Dr. Shicun Wu

The organizers of the event to honor Madame Chien-Shiung Wu on September 24, 2022 in Washington D.C. received a heartwarming congratulatory note from the President of Yale University, Peter Salovey.

Remarkably and not unexpected, President Yale in his enthusiastic letter of congratulatory note stated that “I am proud that Yale University recognized Madame Chien-Shiung Wu’s work by awarding her an honorary degree in 1967 comment ceremony”!

In the same letter, President Salovey said that “she was an influential advocate for women in

science and teaching of STEM subjects to all students.”

President Salovey also said something that few people know about the fact that “she

persuaded U.S. President Gerald Ford to create the Office of Science and Technology” (in the

White House!)

Da Hsuan Feng, the chairman of the C. S. Wu event, was deeply touched by these comments

from President Salovey:

“I am so pleased, and certainly not surprised, that my friend Peter Salovey has such high

opinion of the intellectual and humanistic worthiness of this great woman of the 20th century.

With Yale University has the profound history of being the first to accept Chinese students to

study in the 19th century, these words from its current leader certainly underscores the

profound importance of Madame Wu both for the United States and China.”

It is worth underscoring that in May of this year, when Nanjing University celebrated its 120th

year anniversary (Alma Mater of Madame Chien-Shiung Wu), Peter Salovey representing Yale

University delivered a heartfelt video congratulation comment.

About the C.S. Wu Global Forum

In order to commemorate Madame Chien Shiung Wu's 110 Anniversaries, Nanjing University Alumni Association United States (USAAUS) will host the first C.S. Wu Global Online Symposium, on September 24th, 2022. It welcomes scientists, teachers and students all over the world to join this open event.

The son of Madame C.S. Wu, Dr. Vincent Yuan, expressed his great pleasure in approving the NUAAUS to organize this commemorative event.

The U.S. Postal Service wrote to NUAAUS and authorized the use of Chien-shung Wu commemorative stamp to honor her as "one of the most influential nuclear physicists of the 20th century".
