Excerpts from the Congratulatory Message from the Taicang Municipal People's Government for the September 24th 2022 Event to Honor One of Its Favorite Daughters, Madame Chien-Shiung Wu

To: Chinese Physical Society, American Physical Society, Nanjing University American Alumni

Association United States (NUAAUS):

On September 19, 2022, the Organizing Committee of the International Forum to Commemorate the 110th Birthday of Ms. Chien-Shiung Wu received a congratulatory letter

from the government of Ms. Wu’s hometown, which is Taicang in Jiangsu Province. The

following are some of the relevant information specific for this event and we took the liberty to

excerpt below.

It is known that the International Forum to commemorate the 110th anniversary of the birth of

Ms. Wu Jianxiong will be held in the United States on September 24, jointly sponsored by the

Chinese Physical Society and the American Physical Society, and organized by the Nanjing

University Alumni Association United States (NUAAUS). I want to wish the event a smooth

progress, and I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to the NUAAUS for their diligence in

hosting this event.

110 years ago, Madame Wu was born in Taicang, and was sent to study at Central University, which is the predecessor of Nanjing University today. After that, she went to the United States for further studies and started a tremendous scientific career. Throughout her life, Madame Wu was always palpably concerned about education in Taicang. On five occasions, she returned to her hometown to visit relatives. It should be noted that she not just solely fund the construction of the Ziwei Building at the Mingde School where she was a student, but also set up the "Wu Zhongyi Scholarship" in the name of her father. After Madame Wu passed away, she was buried in her alma mater Mingde School’s school yard in Taicang. Indeed, Madame Wu was deeply proud of the her fellow in Taicang’ers.

Taicang is a beautiful city. It is the largest foreign trade port on the Yangtze River in China, with a strong propensity towards the development of its economy and education. Besides our

favorite daughter Madame Wu, it is worth noting that we are also very proud that the father of

Dr. Steven Chu, who is a 1997 physics Nobel laureate, was also a Taicang’er.

With the greatest of sincerity, the people of Taicang would welcome scientists and friends from

the Chinese Physical Society, the American Physical Society, and the NUAAUS to visit Taicang.

Finally, I wish this event a complete success.

Taicang Municipal People's Government.
