Dr. Wang will be speaking at the C.S. Wu's Symposium

Alumni of Nanjing University and Top-Notched Scientist Academician Yifang Wang will speak at event to honor Madame Chien Shiung Wu.

南京大学校友、顶尖科学家王一芳院士将在活动上致辞,向吴健雄女士致敬。

Academician Yifang Wang

The organizer of the event on September 24, 2022, Nanjing University Alumni Association United States (NUAAUS) to honor Madame Chien Shiung Wu is proud to announce that Academician Yifang Wang, director of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) will be one of the distinguished speakers at the event.

A 1984 graduate in physics from Nanjing University, Academician Wang spent many years working in CERN and eventually received a doctorate of physics from the University of Florence.

In 2016, Academician Wang was bestowed with the highly prestigious “Breakthrough Prize” for his leadership role in the Daya Bay reactor neutrino experiment. The citation for Academician Wang’s award reads as “For the fundamental discovery and exploration of neutrino oscillations, revealing a new frontier beyond, and possibly far beyond, the Standard Model of particle physics.”

It should be emphatically mentioned that for the above scientific accomplishment, both Kam-Biu Luk and Yifang Wang were also bestowed in 2014 the most important prize of the American Physical Society (APS) for particle physics, the Panofsky Prize.

Under his leadership at the IHEP, many world-renowned projects were initiated and completed, which undoubtedly uplifted the scientific ambiance of China. Besides the Daya Bay scientific establishment, the others massive state-of-the-art scientific establishments include

  • (a) The Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC). This is a large international scientific facility proposed by the Chinese particle physics community in 2012 to explore the physics of Higgs. The CEPC, to be hosted in China in a circular underground tunnel of approximately 100 km in circumference, is a double-ring collider with electron and positron beams circulated in opposite directions in separate beam pipes, and the detectors are installed at two interaction points (IPs);

  • (b) The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO). This is a world-class medium baseline reactor neutrino experiment under construction at Kaiping, Jiangmen, also in Guangdong province.

When Academician Wang learned that he has been invited to speak at the event, he said with great emotion the following:

“I am very fortunate to have followed Madame Wu’s speech in 80’s at the Nanjing University and in 90’s at CERN, which inspired me tremendously. I remember very clearly her suggestions to the Nanjing University to work on neutrino physics, a special moment in my mind persistently in the last 40 years.  I am honored to have graduated from her Alma Mater, where her thesis advisor, Prof. Sze Shih-Yuan (施士元教授) taught thousands of students in 70 years, including my teachers and myself. In addition, I would like to mention that Prof. Sze was the last Ph.D. student of Madame Curie, this is indeed a marvelous connection between the two greatest women scientists in history.”

About the C.S. Wu Global Forum

In order to commemorate Madame Chien Shiung Wu's 110 Anniversaries, Nanjing University Alumni Association United States (USAAUS) will host the first C.S. Wu Global Online Symposium, on September 24th, 2022. It welcomes scientists, teachers and students all over the world to join this open event.

The son of Madame C.S. Wu, Dr. Vincent Yuan, expressed his great pleasure in approving the NUAAUS to organize this commemorative event.

The U.S. Postal Service wrote to NUAAUS and authorized the use of Chien-shung Wu commemorative stamp to honor her as "one of the most influential nuclear physicists of the 20th century".
